We sell hats for the ski program we run and the Iditarod volunteers and fans are very generous in supporting the ski program. I go to the two airports every day to check on sales and resupply stock. It is all rather exciting! I get to visit with people who have become friends over the years. PLUS---I get to see what is going on!
To the left is a rather large sled that can haul dogs, or supplies to the checkpoint and back. Behind the sled is the vet station. This is were dropped dogs are checked out by the vets. It is a pretty intensive unit, heated, & well equipped. This station or container is housed here in Unalakleet in the off season. Then it is unpacked, open up, and relocated for the race. It has heat and electricity to it and is a totally functioning vet center for the race.
A closer look and the vets are always very chatty and I often drop by to say hello and welcome them to the village! Basically, I am nosey!
Here are 2 planes that fly for the Iditarod Airforce (IAF). I will get better photos another time. Pilots were getting ready to fly out to pick up what they need to pick up. We do have a storm warning so I am sure this is why our airways are filled with a constant hum of small planes!
