Summer Time Fun! (July 2018)

Summer!  Nothing like being outside and enjoying the fun of summer under Montana's Big Sky!  Summer flies by for us as our time in Montana is limited.  There is so much I love about our time down south!  The evening stars, family & friends, BBQing, hiking, biking, swimming, paddling, being home, the porch, yard, flowers . . . the list is endless really.  Other things I love is my favorite coffee shop, bookstore, Community Library, being able to walk around a small town, and of course the farmers market (these things I can not do in the village)

(I deleted my facebook account more photos will be posted here instead of the dreaded "WasteBook!" for now.)

A longtime favorite easy hike west of town.

Lupine Lake

Lupine Lake

Miss Tally always ready for the stick!

Hike up Stahl Peak to the fire lookout.

No longer in use but the old fire lookout still stands.

Christian and his girl Tally or is it Tally and his boy Christian.
Miss Intense Sadie! Such a beautiful girl!

Sadie always just lays right down in any water she can find while out with us. One worn out girl who had a blast this day!

Family reunion time in the wonderful Skalkaho Pass area. At one time there was 21 people and 18 dogs who all got along!

My wonderful FIL who loves his time outdoors! He has done everything a smoke jumper in Alaska, ski instructor, ski patrol, kayaker of big water, hiker, trials bike rider, builder, there is nothing he can't do!

Cooling off and I mean cooling off brrr!

Christian was braver than me as he actually sat in the creek for a bit!
I could live there forever I am sure!
On our drive to the family reunion we hit a dry area and yes there could be rattlesnakes.

Recently Hurricane Kayaks came into our lives.  We purchased  Skimmer 140 and we LOVE our new boats!
Sadie is an 82-pound dog and she can ride in this boat easily!

A great paddling kayak even in the lake with wind and boat wakes from every direction.

Paddling Bliss!

Tally is lighter in weight and Christian is larger than me and the Skimmer performs wonderfully!

Hiking with some wonderful friends!  Interestingly enough both of these ladies are creative artist. I wish some of their talents would rub off on me!  I taught with Lynn in Alaska and we get together every year for a visit.

Theresa is a long time friend we ski, hike, bike, paddle, knit, garden, cook, read--you name it--there is a constant exchange of ideas all the time!

Huckleberries along the trail!

The girls love their ice cream!
Some of you know Christian has a thing for berries.  On the left, we have our new blueberries and on the right our Goumi Berries.  The Goumi Berries are an unusual fruit but they do taste great!

We think this may be the largest cedar on the Whitefish Trail system.

Ok, I will say it here, "I am working on a kids fiction picture book!"

I have discovered a new yarn shop which I just love!  The Woolly Thistle specializes in yarns from the UK and Europe.  This Léttlopi yarn will be used for a Lopi sweater for me in a KAL sponsored by The Woolly Thistle starting in late August.
Recently, I needed to get a grip on a guest and opted for some inspiration from the Dalai Lama.  It was successful and certainly helped me.

Grilling away veggies and pork.
Is that one of the most beautiful cauliflowers ever!

A new nightly tradition is a cup golden milk on the porch by candlelight. A great way to end the day and to feel great the next day.

Book Review: The Nature Fix By: Florence Williams

The Nature Fix by Florence Williams is a book I just finished.  I found it to be an interesting read and a worthy discussion about how being outside is good for us!

It isn't fast, and there was a section that was a bit slow. Overall, I would recommend this book to others. I enjoyed reading about the different countries and what they are doing to get more of their population back into nature.

The chapter on **Please Pass the Hacksaw** about education and the lack of being outside was shocking and scary.  Especially when the author talks about the largest untapped population for antidepressants in the US are preschoolers and how that group is now being put on antidepressants! (Don't get me started!)

The Nature Fix is an insightful read.  I would certainly suggest reading this book!  Below are several photos I took of sections of the book.  I wanted to comment/share this info in hopes more people will read The Nature Fix.  Readers should sit down and question how often they get outside, unplug from screens, how to deal/question with lack of recess, and outdoor time for kids.

Below all photos are from the book: The Nature Fix By Florence Williams. Photos are not in chronological order of the text.

I have felt for all of my years as a classroom teacher, we could certainly learn a lot more from the Finnish educational approach.

This statement about depression and loss of healthy years almost brings me to tears.  Seeing first-hand friends and family members suffer from depression is heartbreaking.  The time and often years wasted in pursuing good mental health is staggering.  There has got to be a better way to achieve healthy mental wellbeing for people.
One of the issues with all of this research is how one will be able to measure the benefits of being outside.  For myself and others, we seem to know intuitively that being outside makes us healthy. We crave the outdoors and this time heals us daily.

This is just so freaking scary! Why do kids have to sit still all day long, why are we so fixated on testing small children in schools all the time, why has this been allowed?

What we have done to learning and education.  As I have always said to parents,
"
Please don't let school get in the way of your child's education/learning."
I am not saying that technology is evil and we shouldn't use it. Teaching moderation would be a gift to kids and adults.  One tool that I have seen work well is a pocket caddy by the door where phones are placed by kids friends and family members.  A parent was very upset with friends of their kids posting photos on social media from within their home by young visitors.

I loved this chapter intro!

Exactly!

A collective UGH!

Time to try to add some of nature back into our lives I would say.

Nature and being outside actively or quietly is nothing but good for our minds and bodies it is even free for the most part!
If that doesn't make the act of simply walking sound intriguing! HA!

Reading done outside by candlelight has to be good for us I am sure!
Please treat yourself to an insightful read:

Summer . . . well it hasn't really arrived yet!

The summer solstice came and left.  We still don't really have summer.  I am not really complaining at all as heat is not my thing!  I lived in Africa and the middle east.  I know heat and I know I don't like it like other people.  The flowers are all doing great with all this rain and cool temperatures. Whitefish is green, lush, and colorful.  The heat of summer is just on slow-mo this year.  Rumor has it after the 4th we will be in the 90s!  One extreme to the next!

Biking has been great! I am not injured this year, we are riding or hiking just about every day.  I would be on the river paddling more as we have wheels to haul our Native Boards down easily to the Whitefish River.   At 46ºF this morning I am not too eager to get on the river and freeze—-been there and done that enough in my lifetime!

Reading the 3rd book in "Summer King Chronicles" YA fantasy series by Jess E Owen.  I am in awe of Jess's work.  She even made time to meet up with me and to share her thoughts on self-publishing.

MTN Bike riding on the Whitefish Trails

Feeling so grateful that I can bike, paddle, ski and move after my small knee surgery!

Here in Whitefish after decades of dedicated folks, the Whitefish Trails were established, built and now used/loved by walkers, bikers, runners, young & old!

Dogs have many swimming spots along our rides and on the trails if you pick wisely.

Yes, I am a wimp when it comes to the twists and turns of the downhills!

My best buddy Miss Sadie she is my companion!  Although she loves to scope out the surrounding area around the trails at times.  Sadie is an explorer!

Riding up Taylor Creek in the fog this weekend.  It was really cool and mysterious and I just love it when the mountains are covered in fog.

Indian Paint Brush in the background.

So far this summer has been rather cool and rainy.  This photo was taken in earlier June when summer came by for a visit.

Cooling off in Haskill Creek at the end of a mountain bike ride.

Earlier June snow on the ski hill.

I am loving these geraniums I planted this summer.  They just remind me of an old fashion floral print for a summer dress.  Which I will point out is nothing I would ever wear----

Sadie loving her dog ice cream from #sweetpeaksicecream.
Look at that tongue and empty ice cream dish!

Christian and his Haskap berries and crisp below.

One of the things I carve all winter up north is the Farmers Market here in Whitefish!  Oh so crunchy!

Witches feet from the Wizard of Oz!  Nice early morning bike ride under the Montana Big Sky looking up Whitefish Lake.
Stumptown DK yarn hand dyed right here in Whitefish at the Knit'N Needle!  I needed up some fingerless mittens for my sister.  I am going to work on this simple design a bit to come up with a better pattern.

Ah, Huckleberries are beginning to turn bluey-purple and I am sure would be bursting with ripeness when the rain stops and the sun arrives!
